PYF: Youth 6-12

The Presbyterian Youth Fellowship (PYF) is FPCA’s ministry for 7th — 12th graders (and college too!)

Weekly Fun, Food & Fellowship

The group meets for food, fun, and fellowship on Sunday evenings at 5:00PM.  A wide variety of interests among our youth make for a welcoming environment for newcomers.

Skiing, Camping, Rafting & More

In addition to gathering for dinner and games on Sunday nights, we try to plan several outings throughout the year. Each year’s events vary due to the youths’ interest, but in year’s past we’ve enjoyed….

  • Traveling to Ghent, West Virginia for a winter retreat.  Staying in slope-side condominiums, participants enjoy two full days of snow skiing/boarding and ample time for bonding, reflection, and worship.
  • Whitewater Rafting in the Great Smokey Mountains (on the same river used for the 1996 Olympic Whitewater Events).
  • Backpacking through the backcountry of Alabama on an overnight backpacking trip.  Recent expeditions have included the Sipsey Wilderness of the Bankhead National Forest and Cheaha State Park.

The group also conducts fundraisers, enjoys overnight lock-ins, retreats, and local outings (Baron’s game, Veterans Park, etc.) We plan a variety of group activities throughout the year based on youth interest.

Mission Work

Mission work is an integral part of PYF’s focus as well.  Our mission work varies each year, but a few examples include…

Serving dinner to the residents of Jimmie Hale Mission’s ( Shapura Men’s Shelter.

In the summer months (except Triennium years) we try to plan a week-long mission trip. Trips in the past have included work in a disaster site or impoverished area where physical labor is needed to help improve or rebuild, and we’ve also worked with the CITI Camp in Memphis and with Appalachian Ministries in Tennessee. Each of these missions giving our youth hands-on ministry opportunities.

Youth Conferences

Our denominational  connections are strengthened each summer as our young people participate in the Cumberland Presbyterian Youth Conference.  Every third year brings PYF to join with thousands of other Presbyterian teenagers at Purdue University for the Presbyterian Youth Triennium (  Several PYF members have played active leadership roles in planning and conducting both events.

Active Ministry Requires Active Supporters

The Presbyterian Youth Fellowship is a vibrant and active ministry where the youth of our congregation and the community find acceptance, encouragement, and faith.  Young people of this age group are invited to participate in any of these activities.  And everyone (of all ages) is invited to participate in this vital ministry by providing the Sunday evening meals (speak with Lori Harnish for more details).
