" Turn the Page"

On more than one occasion, from more than one person, the word has been spread about how much the events of this past Sunday meant ( and mean ) to our congregation. Regardless of your emotional attachment to the Elliottsville congregation, whether a long time member, a newer member, or a visitor, Sunday?s worship, which included three baptisms, five public professions of faith, one re - affirmation of faith and church membership vows, and one membership received by transfer, was a wonderful experience of the activity of God?s Spirit and a joy to witness. I count it an humble experience to serve with Pastors Tom and Earl and with this congregation in such a meaningful service.

Now before us is the call to live out the commitments we all made on Sunday. The new disciples cannot quit their study. The mentors cannot dissolve themselves from seeing over the confirmands they served. The congregation cannot cease praying and guiding those who are new to the faith and new to this congregation. God always has brighter, greater possibilities in store for the church. God doesn?t desire us to live in the past, even if that past is only a few days old. Should we enjoy what was accomplished through us on Sunday? Absolutely. Should we celebrate that new members of God?s kingdom are among us? Surely. Should we rejoice that we have pledged our commitment to baby Sarah and her parents to teach her what it means to become a child of the covenant? Yes.

Then, doesn?t the question become how should we enjoy, celebrate, and rejoice? I don?t know the complete answer to that question. But, I do know that as we faithfully respond to God?s work among us and through us, God will reveal what we are to do. Come to think of it, maybe that is the complete answer and an appropriate beginning for the continued teaching and nurturing of the new members of this congregation: God is at work, and we have the humble honor to be agents of that work as we listen, pray, seek, remain open, remain flexible for and to the revelation of God.

There aren?t many days or experiences more satisfying than the kind of day God delivered on Sunday. Well, except for those days yet to unfold, those experiences yet to be revealed. Remember, greater things than these will be accomplished! Makes you want to turn the page, doesn?t it?!

Grace and peace,
