At the shepherd meetings held in November,
there was discussion about the possibility of the church entering into
a campaign to retire the sanctuary and balcony debt. The session has
formalized those plans and the Task Force has met on a couple of
occasions to get the campaign rolling. The campaign will unfold over a
six month period. Here’s an overview of what the campaign will look
like.
During January and February there will be
cottage meetings held in the homes of church members. As with
everything we do in the church there is a theological underpinning that
guides our thinking and acting. The Task Force has settled on Mark 12:
41 - 44 as the scriptural focus of the campaign. At the cottage
meetings we will discuss the theological reasons for being a debt free
church and the importance of all the church’s people responding and
supporting the campaign through sacrificial giving. There will also be
opportunity to have discussion about the practical benefits of the debt
retirement campaign, and people will be given an opportunity to make
plans about their financial participation in the campaign.
Representatives of the Task Force will be on hand at each cottage
meeting to facilitate the discussion.
As March and April enter the picture the focus
will turn to getting the smaller groups of the church involved in hands
on fund raising. Kathy Dailey will be heading this adventure. Sunday
school classes, women’s ministry groups, PCF, PYF, men’s fellowship,
choir, or any group that folks would like to put together will be asked
to creatively seek out ways to earn or raise money for the campaign.
The Task Force believes it is important for all the ministry and
service groups of the congregation to be involved in the debt
retirement process. March and April should be fun and exciting months.
May and June will be the race to the end of
the campaign months. Elders Mike McCormick and Tim Blackmon will be
leading us through these final two months. These two months will give
us the chance to celebrate our progress and hold ourselves accountable.
We will evaluate where we stand and put together creative strategies to
bring to completion our campaign and our goal of becoming debt free.
These are exciting times in the life and ministry here at
First Presbyterian. God is active among us, and we possess the gifts
and the abilities to accomplish what God is calling us to do. The work
will be hard and will not be without cost to us which is why it will be
important to keep Mark 12: 41 - 44 in front of us at all times. Every
person counts. Every gift counts.
